SHORT NARRATIVE SCRIPT

Hugo is inside his car, talking on the phone with his friend Tommy while driving to school.

HUGO

What’s up bro, how was the weekend?

… Yeah mine was good, just stayed home to finish up some of the homework I had some Thursday.

As Hugo is talking he is looking for a parking space to park his car and parks it.

HUGO

Alright bro I’ll talk to you later.

Hugo looks at his watch while looking for his backpack, still on the phone.

HUGO

Damn, I’m running late yet again. … Aight bro, later.

Hugo hangs up the phone and notices his friend Ashley is waiting for him to enter the school building. Hugo walks towards her.

HUGO

Hey Ash, are you running late too?

ASHLEY

Yeah I had to type my three page paper this morning, it sucked. But anyways since we are running late already, let’s go get a cup of Joe.

HUGO
Yeah sure, I’m down. I’m buying ‘cause you
          got me last time.
ASHLEY

You don’t have to, but thank you.

HUGO
                        No problem.

Documentary Subjects

1&2.  Kim and Mike Becker

Kim and Mike Becker are the founders of Hello Gorgeous of Hope. They give women battling cancer a day of relaxation and pampering. They do a complete makeover. I Know Kim and Mike personally and have given me the approval to film some of their makeovers. If my projects gets picked up I definitely want to record some of the transformations. However, I also want to record Kim and Mike's personal experience in the foundation of the organization.

10 Questions I would ask each of them would be:
1. How did Hello Gorgeous come about?
2. Was it do to a personal experience?
3. How do you select the women for a makeover?
4. Where and when do the makeovers take place?
5. How many volunteers do you guys have?
6. Aside from makeovers, what other events do you have annually?
7. Do you have a core group of members involved in the organizations? Who are they? And when do you usually meet?
8. Tell me a little more about your life story. When did you guys get married?
9. How do you feel when you first meet a candidate for the makeover?
10. What runs through your mind when you see the full transformation?
11. What are some of your words of encouragement you would give to any women battling cancer?

3. Julene Franz

Julene is owner of FIX Salon in Elkhart, IN. She is also a Hello Gorgeous salon affiliate. Hello Gorgeous of Hope has many salon affiliates in 9 different states. They give a spa day, once a month, to one woman that is going through cancer treatment. They also give them a complete makeover. Some local dressing stores donate an outfit, of their choice, to these women. Julene's salon has been doing the makeovers for over five years now. I would love to record a transformation at her salon and also get her personal experience in joining the organization.

10 Questions I would ask Julene:
1.  Tell me a little bit about yourself.
2. How do you know Kim and Mike?
3. How did you get involved with Hello Gorgeous?
4. What exactly do you do as a salon affiliate?
5. Step by step, tell me what goes on during the monthly makeover?
6. What has been on of the best transformations for you?
7. Do you help Kim and Mike with other events?
8. What other roles do you have within the organization?
9. How long does a makeover usually last?
10. How many years have you been a salon affiliate?

Music Video Analysis

Simple Plan's track titled "Untitled" narrates the cause and effects of drunk driving. There are three main locations within the video: the road where the crashed occurred, the victim's parents house and the hospital. The song is very mellow and soft with a depressing sense to it. So the connection of the story and the song was on point, making perfect sense. Drunk driving not only affects other drivers, but whole families in general. In this tale, you see a guy driving around while he is drinking from a bottle. Unfortunately, he looses control and crashes into another car (our victim of the story). The part where the family members are flying all over the place, breaking things, demonstrates that this unfortunate event has a tremendous impact on them as it does her. As far as I know the girl did not make it. So the family just lost a member of the family due to drunk driving. The video has a good sense of suspense and drama. A cool blue tone is used in the collision and road scenes, adding a cold feel to the tragic crash. You also see throughout the video the lead singer of the band singing the lyrics to the song. The way the structure was handled was clever. First, the video begins with firefighters trying to open the girl's car to get her help as soon as possible. We see the drunk guy setting in the middle of the road showing a sense of regret. Then you see people doing ordinary things in a home setting, later we find out they are the victim's family. Then the actual car collision happens and that is when the family members fly everywhere as if they were just hit by a car as-well. Finally, you see the girl reach the hospital. The final scene is of the drunk guy behind bars.

Narrative Project: Overcoming Bullying

A concept I have in mind for the narrative project is that of bullying. But not your typical tragic story of an individual, either a man or women, being bullied to the point of extreme negative consequences. I want to depict an individual that has overcome that horrible past, yet show scenes of when they were being bullied. The BEFORE and AFTER you can say. A motivating narrative. I was never really bullied when I was younger, even though I was a super nerd. However, I did witness extreme cases of bullying. It's practically everywhere.

Documentary Project: Hello Gorgeous!

I kind of did my research for a documentary a bit prematurely. The print shop I work for is the main printer for a local organization called Hello Gorgeous of Hope. To explain the organization briefly: they focus in giving women that are battling cancer a complete makeover. They give all these women a sense of hope. I know Mike and Kim Becker personally, the founders of the organization, and I briefly asked if it was a possibility to do a documentary on their organization. And they said "why not." So this would be a neat opportunity for the documentary project.

Music Video: HoPe by Ezdrash

I would do my music video with a holiday touch. The tag line for this concept would be "Searching for the true holiday spirit." I found the track HoPe by Edrash on Jamendo. Just a very brief idea I have: is the imagination of a homeless young kid wanting to find the true meaning of giving. In today's world, we care about the materialistic aspect of the holidays, but what really matters are the stuff we do not have like a united family nor a home. Its a very rough idea.

Introduction

Hello everyone,
My name is Hugo F. Garza, F. is for Fabian but I usually never use my middle name. I'm a senior. I'm originally from the northern state of Tamaulipas in Mexico. My family moved to the United States, to South Bend to be exact, when I was 6 and have been here since. My major is New Media with a concentration in Graphic Design. I began my college journey back in 2006, but unfortunately I took a few years off to focus on my job. That was a bad idea. However, it was my goal to come back to finish and here I am. I only have one sister, she's also in the New Media program here at IU South Bend, she is a freshmen. I've been working as a graphic designer at Artcraft Printers since 2010, I actually did my graphic design internship with them and stuck around. I own a Sony a65 DSLR camera and a Sony NEX-VG 20 Camcorder, so yeah I really like Sony products ha. The Marvel movies have to be my favorite, but the Hunger Games films are my second option. I watch a lot of television. Some of my favorite shows include: Breaking Bad, Weeds, Sons of Anarchy, Greys Anatomy, Lost, House of Cards, Orange is a New Black, Agents of SHIELD & Once Upon a Time. I also tend to watch a lot of reality TV because it helps me observe and analysis how they are edited.
